The order reached me, from the great king Trdat, to write [a History] of the times, relating, first, the valiant deeds wrought by the brave Khosrov, and what he accomplished in battle at the time when his rule was unsteady, struck from every side, troubled by nations; the death of the brave Khosrov, as to whence, why, how, and what transpired; concerning the valiance of his noble son Trdat, and what was wrought during his reign; concerning the beloved martyrs of God, who shone like stars and scattered the mists of darkness from Armenia; as to how and why they came, and how they exchanged themselves for the truth of God; how God, by His mercy, visited Armenia and displayed miracles through the hands of one man, who single-handedly and patiently bore all manner of tribulations and was imprisoned in the city of Artashat for the sake of Christ, conquered two scourges, was named a martyr, reached the point of death, but, by the will of God, turned around and took oversight over Armenia; came [again] to the threshold of the gates of death, but once more by the will of God turned around and was found to be a messenger of Christ’s teaching following God’s miraculous, benevolent punishment. And the well-deserving Trdat, with a sudden change of will, welcomed Life and became desirable to all, and was found by the grace of God to be a son of his newborn patrimony and a recipient of life eternal.
