Now, in composing this book in proper fashion, we have not based it on information from old tales but on the spiritual deeds that we were eyewitness to, and the illuminating and graceful teaching, according to the commands of the Gospel, which by the grace of God was exalted in the highest degree. With this, the king—or, above all, the will of the Almighty Christ—yoked everyone to the divine ordinances. And as to how the king turned his hands to destroying the pagan temples and laying the holy foundations of churches; how he made the aforementioned man shepherd of the country and how they enjoyed his teaching; how Trdat returned to the land of the Greeks during the reign of the God-loving Constantine, king of the Greeks and the Romans; how he set up a pact, established him in piety and returned with great gifts and many honors; and how Trdat dedicated many places to God. All this we will relate, one by one, along with the teaching of the Saint who became worthy of the great episcopal throne and inherited the patriarchal rank with victorious virtue, and as to whence he came, who he was, from whom he descended or from what line, that he became worthy to do this by the divine grace granted to him.
