IV

The early history of the clan of Sisak. How it was established by Vagharshak, king of the Armenians.

 

We shall now leave aside all the frivolous tales of old and stick to only the authentic materials about the beginnings of the lofty and magnificent sovereign lords of Siwnik' and the clan of Sisak. For there are a considerable number of these works which are quite useful if we extract solely the material in which we are interested. 

 

In this principality, beginning with the patriarch Sisak, power passed successively from father to son for a long time. They performed many great acts of bravery in the wars of the Armenian kings and were rewarded by numerous glorious gifts and stations by Persian, Armenian, and even Greek monarchs. Indeed, they became so renowned that it was commanded that they should have [honors such as] silver thrones to sit on and pearl-studded hair ornaments and the image of a wild boar [engraved] on their signet rings. They also [enjoyed the privileges] of wearing [the imperial] red shoes and bearing a gold mace upon which the name and honor of the clan were written. And so matters remained until the time of Vagharshak, whom his brother Arshak enthroned over the Armenians, thereby initiating the dynasty of the Arsacids (Arshakunis) in Armenia. Vagharshak did not fancy the confused order [existing in Armenia] or that people of no lineage should manage his kingdom. None of his predecessors had concerned himself with this, nor had [his predecessors] established any goodly arrangement [of precedence] for the kingdom. Thus, [prior to Vagharshak] individuals advanced or regressed in accordance with circumstance and chance. 

 

[Vagharshak] established good and laudable arrangements. First, he ordered that the Bagratunis be at the head [of the nobility] and [have the office of] coronant. He styled them aspet and favored them with a position above all the others. Next he designated the Canaanite Dzer'e's Gnt'uni as his dresser, putting him in charge of the royal wardrobe. And he continued in this vein [filling offices] as needed by the royal house. On the eastern front he established the great and primary principality, the clan of Sisak, and with it [the family of] Kadmean. He ordered that the line of Sisak should be military commanders over all the royal forces, second [in rank] in his kingdom, and always on guard for battle at the Gate of the Huns. The first of this clan was named Sisak. From among [Sisak's] sons, [Vagharshak] selected one, a very brave, handsome, and mild-mannered man named Er'an, and designated him patriarch of the great plain of Ar'an, from the Arax River to Hunarakert. This land was called Aghuank' after him, because of his mild and pleasant deportment. This brief information is provided so that you will realize that not only the people of Siwnik' but the Aghuans have [Sisak] as an ancestor, and that they are older than the others.

Սակս Սիսական տոհմին նախակարգութեան թէ որպէս կարգեցաւ ի Վաղարշակայ՝ Թագաւորէ Հայոց:

 

Փափագելի է մեզ այժմ թողուլ զամենայն սնոտիապատում վէպս հնոցն, եւ բուռն հարուլ միայն զերջանկաւէտ բարեբաստութեանց եւ նախագահ նախակարգութեանց վեհափառ տէրանցն Սիւնի եւ ցեղին Սիսակայ, քանզի երկք աշխատութեանց յոլովք են, եւ շահ օգտութեան եւ ոչ մի ինչ. յորմէ ի բաց տարեալ զձգտումն մտացս՝ պիտանիքն միայն ի մէջ անցեալ արձանասցին մեզ:

 

Արդ՝ սկսեալ նահապետութիւնս այս ի նախնւոյն Սիսակայ երեւելի հարազատութեամբ պայազատեն զտէրութիւնն որդիք ի հարց երկայն եւ բազում ժամանակօք: Բազում եւ մեծամեծ քաջութիւնս ցուցեալ ի պատերազմունս թագաւորացն Հայոց. եւ բազում եւ մեծամեծ պարգեւօք եւ գահիւք պատուեցան ի թագաւորացն Պարսից եւ Հայոց նաեւ Յունաց իսկ: Եւ այնքան անուանիք եղեն, որ մինչ հրամայեցաւ նոցա գահոյս ունել արծաթի, եւ վարսակալ ածել մարգարտեայ եւ մատանի ունել խարազագիր: Նաեւ կօշիկ կարմիր եւ մական ոսկի՝ ունելով ի վերայ գրեալ զանուն եւ զպատիւ ցեղին: Եւ այսպէս հասեալ մինչեւ ցՎաղարշակ, զոր թագաւորեցոյց Արշակ՝ եղբայր իւր, ի վերայ Հայոց ի սկիզբն թագաւորութեան ցեղին Արշակունեաց ի վերայ Հայոց, որ էր առաջին Վաղարշակ: Սա ոչ կամեցեալ խառն կարգօք եւ անազգի մարդկամբ վարել զթագաւորութիւն իւր. զի ցայն վայր ոչ էր եղեալ ումեք փոյթ յառաջնոցն կարգի եւ գեղեցիկ յարմարման օրինի թագաւորութեան. Այլ ըստ յառաջադիմութեան եւ պատահման ամենայն ոք բարձրանայր եւ ամենայն ոք խոնարհէր:

 

Կարգէ սա գեղեցիկ յօրինուածով եւ գովելի կարգօք. Նախ՝ ի գլխոյն սկսեալ հրամայէ Բագրատունեացն թագադիր լինել, եւ անուանէ զնոսա ասպետս, եւ շնորհէ ունել զնախնականն բարձ ի վերոյ քան զամենայն: Եւ ապա կարգէ ընդ սմա զՁեռէս ի զաւակէ Քանանացւոց, ի ցեղէն Գնթունեաց զգեցուցանողս ինքեան. եւ դնէ ի վերայ արքունի հանդերձից: Ըստ սոցա եւ զայլսն  եւ ըստ պիտոյից տանն արքունի: Իսկ յարեւելից կողմանէ կարգէ մեծ եւ առաջին նահապետութիւն զՍիսական տոհմ. ընդ սմա եւ զԿադմեանն: Եւ հրամայէ Սիսականացն հրամանատար լինել ի վերայ ամենայն արքունի զօրացն, եւ երկրորդ թագաւորութեան իւրոյ. եւ ընդդէմ կալ հանապազ պատերազմաւ դրանն Հոնաց. որոյ անուն առաջնոյն Սիսակ կոչիւր: Իսկ ի զաւկէ սոցա ընտրեալ այր մի յոյժ արի եւ գեղեցիկ եւ քաղցր բարուք՝ զԵռան անուն. եւ կարգէ նահապետ ի վերայ մեծ դաշտին Առանայ, յԵրասխայ մինչեւ ցՀունարակերտ: Եւ վասն քաղցր բարուցն աղու ձայնէին զնա. որ եւ աշխարհն յանուն նորա Աղուանք կոչեցաւ: Ահա այս սակաւ մի տեղեկութիւն քեզ զի գիտեսցես զսոսա ոչ միայն Սիւնեաց, այլ եւ Աղուանիցն գոլ նախնի նաեւ երիցագոյն քան զնոսա:
