Agathangelos' History of the Armenians

Now I have resolved to delve deeply into the books of historians, and to make them known to those who would wisely lend an ear to this useful History. This command reached me, one Agathangelos, who am from the city of great Rome, trained in the classics, educated in Latin and Greek, and not unskilled in penmanship. Thus I arrived at the Arsacid court in the reign of the valiant, virtuous and strong warrior Trdat, who wrought acts of gargantuan courage in battle, and is braver than all his ancestors, having surpassed them with valor. He did not command us to relate a false account of his courage, nor to construct tall tales in palatable words, but to narrate what transpired in the course of these unsteady times: tumultuous wars, sword fighting and bloodshed, rabbles of immense armies, the captivity of countries, the plundering of provinces, the destruction of cities, the cession of towns, and the smiting of multitudes out of daring or vengefulness.
