For we, who are wanting in wisdom, have been urged by kings to compose clear histories about what has transpired up until our times. Yet a monumental task has been set before our successors; namely, to recall in order the compositions written over the course of centuries, for it is not that we determined to do this of our own accord, but rather, it being beyond our power to oppose the royal command, we shall narrate [these histories] to the best of our ability. We have thus committed ourselves to the business of words, out of fear, to present you with this fine History—written canonically, according to custom, chronologically, and according to events that transpired—that it may be examined and investigated section by section.
