To those who love God, the virtue of the soul is magnificent like a precious pearl (or, perhaps like a precious Indian gem): whole, bright, and rare, and—by its elegance and without any blemish that can take away from its pearlescence—adorns the crowns of kings. Now how can anyone happen upon this by chance, except for luxury merchants who stretch their money, spare no efforts on long journeys, and come to adorn kings only after great diligence? But the pearlescence [of these], which we advertise, do not merely adorn the heads of kings for others to see, but adorn, illuminate, satisfy, befit, comfort, and heal everyone. This beautifies kings in the likeness of the diadem with the shining band; it also satisfies the poor, [allowing them to] shake off and rise above the muck, and stand as equals to their rulers, and fills lands with blessings and sweetly crowns the year.
