For although they are driven by compulsion, they learn to save themselves through stressors and for the sake of benefiting others. Accustomed by their constant comings and goings due to trade, their practiced wisdom has instilled in them composure: with but a small amount [of merchandise] they multiply [their profits] hundreds and thousands-fold. Thus do they go on braving the multitudinous waves of the boundless sea, propelled not by their wills but by the vicissitudes of the wind, drifting along the currents of the wide sea, to realize profit. Thus do they put their lives in peril, betraying themselves to the depths [of the sea], that they may find life or death.
