Agathangelos' History of the Armenians

Prologue

I

The coveted aspiration of sailors is to arrive safely at harbor—this is the joy of peace. For in the bursting waves and tempestuous winds that turn against them, they prepare for battle. Hungry for riches and thirsty for profits, they bridle the oars of their wooden horses (cf. Habakkuk 3:15), forged with iron and fastened with nails, encouraging one another, galloping across the blue plain with apprehensive dread in their hearts, flying with the stepless advance of motionless feet upon the waters of the sea, where the angry waves swell like mountains and then oscillate downwards, as in the song of the sage storyteller, the harpist David: “They rise and become mountains and descend and become plains.” (Psalm 103:8 LXX) And then, surviving the billows, they each go on expeditions to their hometowns and relate this story to their dear loved ones—the vicissitudes that they experienced along the arduous journey through the agitated waters, pledging themselves to the realization of profits and struggling to overcome death, risking their lives for their trade. For though they may see the titanic force of the storm-tossed waves, the various shades of colors [of the sea] in its rolling billows, and the heaping torrents of sea spray, one after another, yet when they at last set upon the stretches of the sandy shore, they shall laugh on arrival.
