Վասն հաւալսան

Բարոյախաւսն ասէ զհաւալսան թռչնոյ թէ կարի որդեսէր է. եւ յորժամ հանէ զձագսն եւ սակաւիկ մի աճեն. Ապտակեն զանդամսն հաւրն եւ մաւրն եւ նոքա կռփեն եւ սպանանեն զնոսա. եւ յետոյ ի գութ եւ ի գորով դարձեալ՝ սուգ առնուն երիս աւուրս թէ ընդէ՞ր սպանաք զորդեակսն։ Եւ յերրորդ աւուրն գայ հայրն նոցա եւ հերձու զկողս իւր եւ արիւն, որ իջանէ եւ մեռեալ մարմին ձագուցն, յարուցանէ զնոսա ի մեռելոց։

Pelican

The pelican is a bird which greatly loves its children. After the chicks are born and have grown a bit, they slap their mother and father on the face. [The parents] strike back and kill them. Then, in remorse and sorrow, they mourn for three days, [saying]: "O, why did we slay our own children?" On the third day the father comes, splits open his side, and lets his blood flow over the bodies of the dead chicks. And it brings them back to life.

Learn Classical Armenian!

Learn Classical Armenian! started in June, 2021 with daily Grabar (Classical Armenian) exercises. Each exercise is designed to take about 15-30 minutes to work through, with most of the material sourced or modified from the 5th century Classical Armenian translation of the Bible. With the encouragement of Robert Bedrosian , the exercises have increasingly come to focus on "spoken" Grabar by emphasizing short, natural phrases that help the reader think in Grabar and, hopefully, come to parse longer sentences later on. Thanks to Taveen Miloyan for his help with developing the program for the exercises.   To whet the appetite, here are some famous literary lines that I recently translated into 5th century style Classical Armenian.
