Երանելւոյն Աբրահամու՝ Մամիկոնէից եպիսկոպոսի առ Վաչագան՝ Աղուանից արքայ թուղթ սակս ննջեցելոցն։

Միտ դիր, ո՛վ սիրելի, զի թէ գիտութիւն եւ անգիտութիւն յաղագս հոգւոցն ննջեցելոցն ասիցեմք, չիք ինչ բնաւ այնպէս ախմար քան զոչ հանգուցեալքն։ Այլ Աստուած, որ ընդունիչ է պատարագաց եւ կատարիչ ուխտից, լսէ աղաւթիցն կենդանեաց, ընդունի զպատարագսն եւ թեթեւացուցանէ զբեռինս հոգւոցն մեռելոց՝ յուսով ննջեցելոց, զոր եւ ուսուցանեն մեզ Գիրք Սուրբք, որպէս Եղիսէոս ոչ մանկան՝ մեռելոյնլսելով, այլ մաւրն աղաչանաց լսելով՝ կենդանացոյցզ մանուկն եւ աւանդեաց մաւրն։ Եւ տէր Աստուած մեր գթացեալ յայրին՝ յարոյց զմիամաւր որդի նորա. Եւ առաքելոցն յայրեացն արտասուս եւ ի հառաչանս նայելով յարուցին զՏաբիթայն եւ աւանդեցին զնա նոցա։ Արդ՝ եթէ ընտանեացն աղաւթք ի մեռելութենէ ի կենդանութիւն գիտեն ածել, ապա աստուածային զաւրութիւն կարի յոյժ. եւ մեղաց թողութիւն հաւատասցուք առնուլ յուսով ննջեցելոցն, որք կենդանիքս նոցա խնդրեմք թողութիւն մեղաց, յԱստուծոյ ներողութենէն։

The venerable Abraham’s bishop of the Mamikonians’ letter to Vachagan, king of the Aghuans, regarding [the souls of] the departed.

Put it in your mind, dear friend, that whether we speak intelligently or ignorantly about the souls of the departed, no one is so ignorant on this topic as those who have yet to depart. But God, who is the receiver of our offerings and the perfecter of our covenants, listens to the prayers of the living, accepts their offerings and relieves the burdens of the souls of those who departed with hope. Thus does Holy Scripture teach us how Elisaeus, not hearing about the death of the child but hearing the prayers of his mother, brought life to the child and committed him back to his mother (2 Kings 4:36) and how our Lord, God, having compassion on the widow, raised up her only son. And the apostles, observing the tears and weeping of the widows, raised up Tabitha and gave her back to them (Acts 9:40-41). Now if the prayers of relatives can bring the dead to life, then how much more able is the power of God! So let us believe that God forgives the sins of those who depart with hope and let us who are yet living pray for the forgiveness of their sins.
