Therefore they wage battle from atop the mountains of water and from the depths of the valleys of [the surface of] the sea, striving to deliver themselves from the tumult of the billows of the storm and find refuge in the harbor. For truly many do not put themselves in peril out of avarice, but so as to eliminate the exigencies of poverty. Thus do they plunge themselves into danger to pay their dues, or to save their necks and relieve themselves of debt. On top of that they borrow loans that perchance they may realize a dual advantage, by at once satisfying their creditors and profiting themselves.
