Then the king told them about a certain man, a Syrian noble bishop, called Daniel by name, who had unexpectedly invented letters of the alphabet for the Armenian language. So he sent a certain man named Vahrich with messages to a presbyter, whom they called Habel by name, and who was close to Daniel, the Syrian bishop.

Then the king told them about a certain man, a Syrian noble bishop, called Daniel by name, who had unexpectedly invented letters of the alphabet for the Armenian language. When they were told of the invention by Daniel, they encouraged4cf. Acts 18:27 the king to take urgent steps concerning those necessary matters. So he sent a certain man named Vahrich with messages to a presbyter, whom they called Habel by name, and who was close to Daniel, the Syrian bishop.

Hearing this, Habel hastened to Daniel and was first instructed5cf. Acts 18:25 about the letters from him. Then, after receiving them from him, he sent them to the king in Armenia. They arrived to him in the fifth year of his reign. The king, together with saints Sahak and Mashtots, received the letters from Habel with one accord, and they rejoiced.

But when they realized6cf. Acts 4:13, καταλαμβάνω that there weren’t enough letters to express all the syllables7կապ - cf. συλλαβὴ, փաղառութիւն of the Armenian language, especially as the letters had been gathered and raised up from the writings of other peoples, they returned again to the same anxieties in search of a way out.
