After that, according to the measures of the Gospel, turning in servitude to philanthropic^{1"lover of mankind", and not in the now-corrupted sense of monetary donations to bloated organizations} God, stripping himself of his princely desires and accepting the cross of boasting,^{2cf. 2 Cor 10:13; 2 Cor 11:10, 17-18; 1 Thess 2:19} he followed the Crucified Savior of all. And delighting in^{3cf. Romans 7:22} His commandments, he joined the cross-bearing cohort of Christ and immediately entered the eremitic order. He bore many torments of every kind in all things, in keeping with the good tidings, and gave his soul with all discipline to spiritual things—to solitude, life in the mountains, famine and thirst, vegetal sustenance, enclosing himself without light, wearing a hairshirt, and sleeping on the ground. And though he was in need of sleep, he spent many a night of comfortable repose on his feet, in sleeplessness, in the twinkling of an eye.^{4cf. 1 Cor 15:52} All this he did for no short time.
