The wolf and lamb had come to the same river, compelled by thirst: the wolf was standing higher, and the lamb far lower: then the robber incited by an unclean throat, brought on cause of quarrel. “Why,” says he, “hast thou made my drinking water turbid!” The wool-bearer on the other hand fearing, said: “How am I able, I pray, to do that thou complainest of, O wolf? The liquid runs down from thee for my draughts.” He, being repelled by the powers of truth, says, “Six months ago, thou hast spoken ill of me.” The lamb answered: “I indeed was not then born.” “By Hercules,” says he, “thy father spoke ill of me.” And so with unjust death he tears the lamb quickly seized.
