Վասն պերիդեքսիոնի

Է ծառ մի, որ կոչի պեռիդիքտոն. որ թարգմանի կշտապանակ. եւ է ի Հնդիկս. եւ պտուղ ծառոյն քաղցր է քան զամենայն քաղցրութիւն. եւ աղաւնիք իջանեն ի ծառն եւ ուտեն զպտուղն. եւ թշնամի ծառն աւձի. զի ի հովանոյն եւս փախչի. եւ ոչ կարէ մերձենալ ի աղաւնիսն. եւ ոչ ի հովանիս ծառոյն նստիլ կամ հպիլ. եւ թէ յարեւմուտս լինի շուքն. յարեւելս փախչի. եւ թէ յարեւելս, նա յարեւմուտս. եւ թէ աղաւնին մեկնիցէ ի ծառոյն. գտանէ զնա աւձն եւ սպանանէ։

Peridexion

There is a tree in India called the Peridexion, which translates "protector." Its fruit is sweeter than any other. Doves descend on the tree and eat its fruit. Now this tree is inimical to the snake which flees even from its shadow, and is unable to approach the doves. [The snake] can neither sit in its shade nor even get near to it. If the tree's shadow is on the western side, [the snake] flees to the eastern side; and if the shadow is on the eastern side, it flees to the western side. Should the dove leave the tree, the snake will find and kill it.

Learn Classical Armenian!

Learn Classical Armenian! started in June, 2021 with daily Grabar (Classical Armenian) exercises. Each exercise is designed to take about 15-30 minutes to work through, with most of the material sourced or modified from the 5th century Classical Armenian translation of the Bible. With the encouragement of Robert Bedrosian , the exercises have increasingly come to focus on "spoken" Grabar by emphasizing short, natural phrases that help the reader think in Grabar and, hopefully, come to parse longer sentences later on. Thanks to Taveen Miloyan for his help with developing the program for the exercises.   To whet the appetite, here are some famous literary lines that I recently translated into 5th century style Classical Armenian.
