Վասն առիւծու

Սկսցուք ասել վասն առիւծուն, որ թագաւոր է ամենայն գազանաց կամ թէ անասնոց։ Գ բարք են առիւծու. Առաջին բարքն՝ յորժամ գնայ կամ ճեմեսցի՝ հոտ հարկանի նմա յորսորդաց. ագովն զհետն խաղաղէ. զի մի՛ զհետն երթիցեն որսորդքն եւ գտեալ ի մորւոջն կալցեն զնա։ Երկրորդ բարք առիւծուն. յորժամ ննջեն, բաց մնան աչք նոցա։ Երրորդ բարք առիւծուն. Յորժամ ծնանի մատակն առիւծ զկորիւնն մեռեալ ծնանի. եւ նստի պահէ զնա. գայ հայրն յաւուր երրորդի եւ փչեալ ի ճակատն յարուցանէ։

Lion

Let us begin with the lion, which is king of all the beasts or animals. It has three [unusual] traits. First, when [a lion] goes along and the scent of hunters reaches it, it covers its tracks with its tail, so that hunters cannot follow the tracks to its den and seize it. The second trait of the lion is this: when they sleep, their eyes remain open. The third trait: when the lioness gives birth, the cub is born dead. [The lioness] sits and keeps it until the father comes on the third day, blows on [the cub's] forehead, and brings it to life.
