About Saint Epip'an (Epiphanius).

The venerable saint Epip’an had also been a disciple of the great Daniel, and was raised in the wilderness along with saint Shaghitay. After the death of the great high priest Nerses, he went and lived in the wilderness in Great Cop’k’ (Sophene), in Mambre, on the river Mamushegh. He lived in a grotto in accord with the brutes of the wilderness. Bears and big cats gathered to him. He performed great miracles, converting many from paganism to Christianity who had been led astray. He established monasteries and designated teachers throughout Cop’k’, thus becoming a beacon to the land and enlightening its inhabitants.

He also went to Aghjnik’, enlightened its inhabitants and established monasteries there. He built a martyr-shrine in the awan of the city of Tigranakert and established [the observance of] saint days for the salvation of its inhabitants through their [the saints’] intercession. He performed signs there and then returned to his habitation. Near the Mamushegh river was a spring out of which many fish came, and which many people caught and benefited from. But then two brothers fell into a quarrel over the fish, and one killed the other. On learning of this, saint Epip’an said: “Let no one eat of that fish anymore,” from which point on the fish turned bitter. No one fishes there to this day. He performed countless other miracles, too.

Having left many orthodox institutions in these districts, saint Epip’an took his disciples—five-hundred monks who dwelt in the mountains and in the wilderness—and went to the land of the Greeks. On the road, they came across a woman. As they were passing her, Epip’an tested his disciples, and said: “How beautiful and attractive that woman was!”

One of his younger disciples said: “The woman you praised had one eye.”

Saint Epipan replied: “Why did you even look at her face? You looked because you have evil thoughts within you.”

Then he expelled the lad. He himself entered a boat in a great sea and crossed over to a desert island which was full of snakes—vipers and basilisks—and many highly venomous animals. Now it happened that when saint Epip’an arrived, the animals took off and left the island, after which they all lived there peacefully without danger. There, on that island, is where saint Epip’an lived and died.

Յաղագս սրբոյն Եպիփանու։

Այլ երանելին սուրբն Եպիփան էր ընդ սրբոյն Շաղիտայի աշակերտ եղեալ մեծին Դանիէլի. եւ սա ի մանկութենէ սնեալ էր յանապատի: Եւ յետ մահուանն մեծի քահանայապետին Ներսիսի եկն բնակեցաւ նա ի մեծ Ծոփս յանապատին, որ կոչի անուն տեղւոյն Մամբրէ, ի վերայ գետոյն որ անուանեալ կոչի Մամուշեղ: Եւ էր բնակեալ ի քարանձաւս, եւ հանապազորդեալ էր ընդ գազանս անապատի, եւ ժողովէին առ նա արջք եւ ինձք: Եւ էր սա հանապազորդեալ յանապատին, եւ առնէր սա մեծամեծ նշանս եւ սքանչելիս. եւ դարձուցանէր զբազում մոլորեալս ի հեթանոսութենէ ի քրիստոնէութիւն, եւ լնոյր զերկիրն Ծոփաց վանիւք. եւ դնէր վարժեար ընդ ամենայն երկիրն Ծոփաց, եւ լինէր սուրբն Եպիփան լոյս երկրին Ծոփաց, եւ լուսաւորէր զնոսա մեծապէս:

Անցանէր եւ յերկիրն Աղձնեաց, լուսաւորէր եւ զնոսա, եւ լնոյր զերկիրն Աղձնեաց վաներով. եւ շինէր վկայանոց մի յաւանին ի քաղաքին Տիգրանակերտի, եւ յաւր յիշատակի սրբոցն ի փրկութիւն եւ ի բարեխաւսութիւն աշխարհի. եւ առնէր ինքն նշանս, եւ դառնայր ինքն յիւր վանսն: Եւ էր մաւտ ի գետն Մամուշեղ աղբեւր մի, եւ ձուկն բազում ելանէր ընդ ակն աղբերն. եւ բազում մարդիկ հանեալ զձուկն, աւգտէին ի նմանէ: Ապա երկու եղբարք ի վերայ ձկանն հակառակեալք, էսպան մինն զմինն. եւ իբրեւ գիտաց սուրբն Եպիփան, ասէ. Յայսմ հետէ այտի ոք ձուկն մի կերիցէ: Եւ անդէն դառնացաւ ձուկն տեղւոյն, եւ եղեւ իբրեւ զլեղի դառն մինչեւ ցայսաւր ժամանակի. եւ ոչ ոք որսաց զնա մինչեւ ցայսաւր ժամանակի: Բազում եւ այլ զաւրութիւնս առնէր եւ նշանս անչափս: 

Իբրեւ բազում կարգս ուղղութեան թողոյր ի գաւառսն յայնոսիկ սուրբն Եպիփան, իսկ նա էառ ընդ իւր զաշակերտսն իւր արս միանձունս լեառնականս անապատականս, արս հինգ հարիւր, երթալ գնալ յերկիրն Յունաց: Եւ մինչ դեռ երթային, ի ճանապարհին դիպեցաւ նոցա կին մի. իբրեւ անցին ընդ կինն, սկսաւ փորձել զնոսա Եպիփան, ասէ. Իբրեւ զի գեղեցիկ էր կինն եւ վայելուչ: 

Ասէ մանուկ մի յաշակերտաց անտի. Կինն, զոր դու գովեցեր, միականի էր: 

Եւ ասէ սուրբն Եպիփան. Դու բնաւ ընդէր նայեցար տեսանել զերեսս նորա. տեսանես զի խորհուրդք չարք կան ի քեզ: 

Եւ անդէն մեկնեաց զմանուկն յիւրմէ, եւ հալածեաց զնա: Եւ ինքն չոգաւ եմուտ ի ծով մեծ, եւ նաւաւք անցին յանապատ ի կղզիս. եւ ունէր զկղզին զայն աւձից բազմութիւնք, եւ էին յայնմ կղզւոջ բնակեալ աւձք իժք եւ քարբք, բազում գազանք դաժանք թունաւորք: Եւ եղեւ իբրեւ չոգան, եհաս սուրբն Եպիփան ի կղզին յայն, մերժեցան անտի գազանքն, եւ թողին զկղզին եւ գնացին: Եւ այնուհետեւ ոչ ինչ վնաս եղեւ նոցա ի կղզւոջն յայնմիկ, այլ բնակեցան անդ խաղաղութեամբ: Անդ եկեաց սուրբն Եպիփան, անդէն ի նմին կղզւոջ հանգեաւ:
