Grabar Prepositions: Ընդ

Grabar: Ընդ իս եւ ընդ քեզ։

Western Armenian: Իմ ու քու միջեւ։ / Իմ եւ քու մէջտեղ։

English: Between me and you.

Grabar: Ակն ընդ ական։

Western Armenian: Աչքի տեղ աչք։

English: (An) eye for (an) eye.

Grabar: Ընդ ո՞ւմ։

Western Armenian: Որո՞ւ հետ։

English: With whom?

—

Grabar: Ընդ ումեք։

Western Armenian: Մէկումը հետ։

English: With someone.

—

Grabar: Հայեաց ընդ երկինս։

Western Armenian: Դիտէ՛ երկինքը։

English: Look to the heavens. / Look at the sky.

Grabar: Չասեն ինչ ընդ դմա։

Western Armenian: Ոչինչ կ’ըսեն անոր։

English: They say nothing to him.

Grabar: Ոչ եւս շրջէին ընդ նմա։

Western Armenian: Այլեւս չպտըտեցան իրեն հետ։

English: They no longer walked with him.

Western Armenian: Դէպի արեւմուտք։

English: Westward.

Western Armenian: Արեւին տակ։

English: Under the sun.

Western Armenian: Ծառին տակ։

English: Under the tree.

Grabar: Ընդ աջմէ եւ ընդ ահեկէ։

Western Armenian: Աջ ու ձախ կողմերը։

English: To/on the right and left.

Western Armenian: Ամբողջ երկրի մակերեսին վրայ։

English: Upon the whole face of the earth.

Grabar: Եւ էր ընդ նմա ամսաւրեայ մի ժամանակ:

Western Armenian: Անոր հետ լման ամիս մը կեցաւ։

English: And he stayed with him/her for a month.

Learn Classical Armenian!

Learn Classical Armenian! started in June, 2021 with daily Grabar (Classical Armenian) exercises. Each exercise is designed to take about 15-30 minutes to work through, with most of the material sourced or modified from the 5th century Classical Armenian translation of the Bible. With the encouragement of Robert Bedrosian , the exercises have increasingly come to focus on "spoken" Grabar by emphasizing short, natural phrases that help the reader think in Grabar and, hopefully, come to parse longer sentences later on. Thanks to Taveen Miloyan for his help with developing the program for the exercises.   To whet the appetite, here are some famous literary lines that I recently translated into 5th century style Classical Armenian.
