Grabar: Ի սկզբանէ . . .

Western Armenian: Սկիզբէն . . .

English: From the beginning . . .

Grabar: Զի Հայաստան դարձաւ ի բարեաց. հալածեցին զթշնամի:

Western Armenian: Հայաստան բարին մերժեց. Թննամին զինք հալածեց։

English: Armenia turned its back on what is good, and the enemy pursued it.

Grabar: Եթէ դու յահեակ` ես յաջ։

Western Armenian: Եթէ դուն ձախ երթաս՝ ես աջ կ’երթամ։

English: If you [go to the] left, I [will go to the] right.

Grabar: Ոչ է ուրախութիւն իմ ի դոսին:

Western Armenian: Ուրախութիւնս ատոնց մէջը չէ։

English: My happiness is not in those things.

Grabar: Եթէ մերձ ի նա դնէս . . .

Western Armenian: Եթէ իր քովը դնէս . . .

English: If you put it next to her . . .

Grabar: Ի վերայ դնեմք։

Western Armenian: Վրան կը դնենք։

English: We put it on top.

Grabar: Էիք յանապատի անդ զաւուրս բազումս։

Western Armenian: Շատ ժամանակ անապատին մէջ բնակեցաք։

English: You lived in the wilderness for a long time.

Grabar: Հոգի սորա ի սմին է:

Western Armenian: Իր հոգին իր մէջն է։

English: His spirit is in him.

Grabar: Պահեցին յաւուր յայնմիկ։

Western Armenian: Այդ օրը ծոմ պահեցին։

English: They fasted on that day.

Grabar: Դիր ի սրտի քում։

Western Armenian: Սրտիդ մէջ դիր։

English: Put it in your heart.

Learn Classical Armenian!

Learn Classical Armenian! started in June, 2021 with daily Grabar (Classical Armenian) exercises. Each exercise is designed to take about 15-30 minutes to work through, with most of the material sourced or modified from the 5th century Classical Armenian translation of the Bible. With the encouragement of Robert Bedrosian , the exercises have increasingly come to focus on "spoken" Grabar by emphasizing short, natural phrases that help the reader think in Grabar and, hopefully, come to parse longer sentences later on. Thanks to Taveen Miloyan for his help with developing the program for the exercises.   To whet the appetite, here are some famous literary lines that I recently translated into 5th century style Classical Armenian.
