Armenian Church Tiles

John Carswell writes:

In the 17th century, Armenian pilgrims to Jerusalem made many gifts to the convent of St. James, and the cathedral was greatly enriched by their generosity. At the beginning of the 18th century, the patriarchate fell into financial difficulties, owing to the unscrupulous conduct of agents sent from Constantinople to administer its affairs. These difficulties were resolved largely through the efforts of two men, Yovhannes and Grigor ('the Chain-bearer'), where were in 1717 elected patriarchs of Constantinople and Jerusalem respectively, and who managed to extricate the convent from its debts. It then entered a new period of prosperity, and amongst other projects the churches were redecorated.

These decorations included the so-called Kütahya tiles, made by Armenian potters in Kütahya and donated by its local families to help restore the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. But for unknown reasons, the tiles were never installed there, and instead many of the tiles came to adorn the Etchmiadzin Chapel of the cathedral of St. James.
