Կանոնք

Սրբոյն Սահակայ Պարթեւի

Յաղագս Եպիսկոպոսաց թէ ո՛րպէս պարտ է ունել զընտանիս սուրբ եկեղեցւոյ։

Ա.6

Արդ զգուշութեամբ պահեսցի ՚ի միջի մերում սահմանս այս կանոնական, եւ մի՛ ոք խոտորեսցի յաստուածահաճոյ հրամանացս այսոցիկ, որով պայծառանան եկեղեցիք, բերկրին քահանայք, զուրախութիւն համբուրեն իշխանք եւ գեղջուկք, եւ երանութեան բան դրուատեաց յաւտարաց ընդունիմք. քանզի պարտ է մեզ ըստ գրեցելումն՝ վկայութիւն բարի եւ յարտաքնոցն ունել, զի մի՛ անունն Աստուծոյ եւ վարդապետութիւնն հայհոյեսցի, որպէս երբեմն բողոքէր մարգարէն պարտաւորելով զԻսրայելացիսն՝ թէ անունն Աստուծոյ վասն ձեր հայհոյի ՚ի մէջ հեթանոսաց։ Իսկ վասն բարիոք կարգաց եւ գործոց մերոց փառաւորեսցեն զհայր մեր որ յերկինս է, ասելով թէ «Սոքա են զաւակ աւրհնեալք յԱստուծոյ, եւ ուրախութեամբ ուրախ լինիցին ՚ի տէր»։ 

Հրեշտակակրաւն վարուց եւ յաւիտենական կենաց նմանութիւն պարտի բերել յինքեան եպիսկոպոսն եւ ամենայն վարդապետք. ուր ոչ ակնառութիւն է եւ ոչ կաշառք, եւ ոչ ընչից մեծարանք, այլ պարկեշտութիւն եւ պատուիրանապահութիւն՝ մերձեցուցանեն լինել քաղաքակից սրբոց եւ ընտանիք Աստուծոյ. եւ դուք յընչասիրութիւն եւ ՚ի կաշառս կործանիք, եւ զգարշելիսն, եւ զպատուիրանազանցսն, եւ զզինուորսն եւ զտգէտսն հաւատարիմ համարիք ՚ի գործ սպասաւորութեան եկեղեցւոյ, եւ ջոլիր եւս յաճախեալ տողէք զկնի ձեր զմերձաւորացն անուանելոց. զի հաղորդութեամբ ձերով այդուիկ՝ զմիս ընտրոցն ուտէք եւ զոսկերս նոցա փշրէք. «Կերիցուք արբցուք, ասելով, քանզի վաղիւ մեռանելոց եմք»։

The Canons of Saint Sahak

Regarding bishops and how they shall keep the members of the Holy Church.

Now let this canonical rule be carefully preserved among us, and let no one stray from these God-pleasing commands by which churches become resplendent, priests rejoice, princes and peasants kiss [in] gladness, and [by which] we receive blessed words of praise from strangers/foreigners. For according to Scripture, we ought to have good testimony even from outsiders that the name of God and his teaching not be blasphemed, as in the past the prophet protested, condemning the Israelites: “For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles” (Isaiah 52:5; Romans 2:24). But for our goodly ordinances and deeds they shall glorify our father, who art in heaven, saying: “They are the posterity blessed by God, and rejoice greatly in the Lord” (Isaiah 61:9-10).

The bishop ought to live a life of angelic faith and conduct himself and all the vardapets in the likeness of eternal life. Where there is no favoritism and no venality, nor honoring of material riches, but [in] modesty and [by] observing the commandments, they shall move closer to becoming fellow-citizens of saints and members of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19). Yet you, in your covetousness and in your venality, are destroyed; and the abominable ones, the transgressors, the soldiers and the unlearned you consider to be faithful in the work of the service of the Church, and you marshal gangs of so-called kinsmen to follow you, that you eat the choicest meats and break bones in communion together, saying: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die” (1 Corinthians 15:32).
