Սրբոյն Սահակայ Պարթեւի

Յաղագս Եպիսկոպոսաց թէ ո՛րպէս պարտ է ունել զընտանիս սուրբ եկեղեցւոյ։

Որպէս վերագոյն ասացաք թէ հայր է Եպիսկոպոսն, եւ ըստ լաւութեան եւ յաջողութեան պարտի փայփայել եւ յառաջեցուցանել զընտանիսն, եւ յանձն առնել զգործ եկեղեցւոյն ըստ կանոնի կարգաց, ուստի այլանդակ անառակութիւնք եւ հերձուածք խամրին, եւ վարք աստուածահաճոյ կենաց հանդերձ բարեպաշտութեամբ պտղալից, զարդարին։ Բայց գիտեմք, զի ոմանք ըմբոստացեալ ճոռոմաբանեն, մանաւանդ ազգասէր ծնկոտքն, զմարգարէին ՚ի կիր առնուլ զբանն՝ թէ «Յընտանեաց զաւակի քո զակն մի՛ արկանիցես». եւ զայն ոչ իմացան թէ ընտանիս զմիաբանութիւն հաւատոցն կոչէ։ Վասն որոյ բարձրաբարբառ փողն եկեղեցւոյ ճշդիւ մեկնեալ գոչէ։ Եւ զի՞նչ ասիցէ. «թէ հնար է, ասէ, ընդ ամենայն մարդկան զխաղաղութիւն կալջիք, մանաւանդ առ ընտանիսն հաւատոյ։» Այս է պատճառ ընտանեացն խնամածութեան. Բայց թէ գետնաքարշ եւ մոմոս լինիցի, եւ պատճառո կեղծաւորիցի բարեպաշտութեան՝ սիրել եւ հարստացուցանել զազգայինս իւր՝ լուիցէ մեւս եւս բանին որ մեղմովն խրատէ՝ թէ «Մի՛ գիտասցէ ձախ քո զի՞նչ գործէ աջ քո»։ Մի՛ ոք իշխեսցէ անամաւթ համարձակութեամբ զչարդ զայդ առնել պատճառս բարեգործութեան. զի չար է կամակար լրբութիւն քան զմեղանչելն. քանզի եղբայրասպանն Կայէն եւ Գէէզի, որ դառն ագահութեամբ էր զբաղեալ, քան ընդ մեղացն եւս առաւել վասն անամաւթ լրբութեան կրեցին պատիժ պատուհասից։

Regarding bishops and how they shall keep the members of the Holy Church.

As we said above, the bishop is father, and according to his goodness and the working of his power he ought to safeguard and lead his household; and take up the work of the Church according to the rules of canons from which perverse licentiousness and dissension are withered up, and put on a God-pleasing life full of fruitful piety. But we know that some rebel and boast, especially clannish sluggards who use the saying of the prophet: “Do not hide yourself from your own flesh” (Isaiah 58:7), who do not realize that what is called kinship is a unity of faith. That’s why the resounding trumpet of the Church sounds the precise interpretation. And what does it say? “If it is possible,” it says, “live peaceably with all men” (Romans 12:18), and “especially with those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). This is cause for taking care of our householders. But if a man be vile and ridiculous under the pretext of piety to favor and enrich those of his clan, let him hear these words also, which mildly reprove him: “[But when you do a charitable deed,] let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing” (Matthew 6:3). Let no one venture to do such evil under the pretext of charity, for willing impudence is worse than sin, since fratricidal Cain and Gehazi, who was occupied in bitter avarice, suffered their punishment less because of sin than by reason of their brazen shamelessness.
